Alphabet Relay

Length of Activity

40 minutes.

Formation:

4 relay lines.

Equipment / Materials

Cut out and laminate 4 sets of the ABC's.

Instructions / Rules

Children are in 4 relay lines. On the word go, the first person in the line runs out to a group of letters and finds the "A". They bring that letter back to their group. Then the next person runs out and find the "B". The game continues until all the letters are found.

Goal(s):

Kindergarten: English Language Arts - 1. The learner will develop and apply enabling strategies and skills to read and write.

1.02 Develop phonemic awareness and knowledge of alphabetic principle.

1.03 Demonstrate decoding and word recognition strategies and skills.

Kindergarten: Healthful Living - 9. The learner will demonstrate an understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.

9.02 Interact positively with students in class regardless of personal differences.

Adaptations (for students / teachers with physical limitations):

Hold up a specific letter and ask them to find it.

Classroom Tips:

Students need to be in control of their bodies as they are looking for the letters. Students, who are in line waiting their turn, will need to be seated.

Variations:

This can be done with more or less than 4 lines.

This can also be done by saying the letter sound and the students will find the letter that goes with the letter sound. You could also do this game for sight word review by calling out a word and the students find the corresponding word.
